Ladiesandgentlemen,UpontalkingaboutfriendshipbetweenCanadaandChina,thefirstpersonetoourmindisDr.HenryBethunewhosacrificedhimselfduringhisdivinejourneytoChinawithamissionofsavingthedyingandliftingthewoundedChinesesoldiersduringthesecondWorldWar.Sincethen,relationshipbetweenusdevelopedstablywithlastingeffortsofbothpeoples.Actually,ourtwocountieshadsetthewholeworldanexampleonhowtoestablishfriendlyrelationshipbetweenwestandeastdespitecultural,religious,andideologicaldisparities.Thenhereesaquestion.Sincewestandeastareoftenspittingagainsteachother,howcanCanadiansfriendssitherefortably,listeningattentivelytoChinesestudents?Isitpossibleforwestandeasttoachievefriendshipregardleofourdisparities?

Actually,truefriendshipisbuiltonourkindowardsotherpeoples,whichIcallbenevolence,themongroundofhumansociety.Itletsusbekindtoothers,whichleadstomutualtrust.Thoughwehavedifferentbeliefs,wehaveamononethatweshouldtreatotherswiththiskindness.Itisthiskindhatcradledourtolerancetowardsothercultures.Buddhism,forinstance,wasfirstlyintroducedintoChinainlateHandynasty.Later,inter-wavedwithChineseTaoismandConfusionism,then,evolvedintoZenwidelyacceptedinEastAsia.Contrarily,Imperialismwasalwaysunderresistanceofpeoplearoundtheworldduetoitsinshortofkindness.ThereasonwebelieveDr.HenryBethuneatruefriendofusisthathewassokindtoChinesepeople.SoareotherCanadianfriends.Despitemanybarriersinourpursuitoffriendship,we’restillexertingourundyingeffortsbasedonthiskindness.

Ladiesandgentlemen,manyNobelPrizewinnershavecalledonthewholeworldtogobacktolearnfromanancientChinesephilosopherConfuciouswhoadvocatesourbenevolencetowardsothers.Ibelievewiththefurtheringmutualunderstandingbetweenwestandeast,canwerealizeourdreamoflivingaharmoniousworld.Thanksforyourkindpresencehere,andthankyouforlistening.

Thearrivalof2008hasbroughtusagoldenopportunitytoexplorethemeaningsofOlympicGames.Hundredsofyearsago,wewerestrugglingatusingdifferentlanguages.WespokeItaliantowomen,Frenchtomen,SpanishtoGod,andGermantohorse!Howevernow,wearedreamingofonemonlanguagewhich,asfarasIsee,willbeinevitablyOlympicGames.

But,whyOlympicGames?Actually,thenatureofamonlanguageistoachieveourmunicationofsoulsbasedonsimilaritiesindifferentcultureswhilerespectculturaldiversities.AnyarticulatelanguageincludingEnglishwillfailthem-selvesinthepursuitofbeingamonlanguage,fortheyevolvedfromdifferentcultures.Onthecontrary,OlympicGameswasbasedourmonbelief,pursuingself-transcendence.AnarticulatelanguagecanbridgeourmunicationthroughspeakingwhileOlympicGames,feeling.Whilespeakinghelpsusmunicatemostlyatinformationaloremotionallevel,OlympicGameshelpsusmunicatemostlybetweenoursouls.Throughathletes’performancecanwefeeltheirspiritsregardleoftheirraces,colors,backrounds,etc.WhenLuzLong,aGermanathletehelpedhisrivalJesseOwenswithhismovementatstartinglineinlongjumppetitionunderHilter’swatch,wearemovedbythesoulofLuzLongthoughtherearenowordsbetweenus.Thenweunderstandbetterwhatbroadmindis.WhenCanadianfigureskatingpairwonthepetitionin2002OlympicGames,wetouchedthetruebeautyofmotion.Yousee,OlympicGamespavedawayforusintotheverymunicationofsouls.
