robinson crusoe, written by daniel defoe in 1719, is considered to be the first novel in english。 ever since its first publication it has become one of the most popular novels in the world。 there are two reasons why the novel is so popular。 one of them is the novel`s theme。 the core of the novel`s theme is colonialism。
in order to understand the theme of the novel, we must consider social background in england at that time:in politics, british bourgeoisie was in the rising period in the 17th century and dissatisfied with feudalism。 after a series of revolutions, advanced political system had set up in british, which lays a foundation for its colonial activity。 in economy, british started industrial revolution in 17th and 18th century。 with the development of industrial revolution, british need acquire more material and seek wider market to sale products。 colonial expansion caters for the need, which we can see from robinson`s colonial activity。 in culture, the enlightenment occurred in western europe in the 18th century。 the english enlighteners were bourgeois democratic thinkers。 they thought the chief means for bettering the society was [enlightenment" or [education" for people。 they believe their thoughts are advanced and they have the rights to educate other race。
under the influence of society, we can easily see that defoe describes robinson as a colonist。
the reason we regard robinson as a colonist is that he embodies the
typical characteristics of the colonist。
firstly, a good colonist should have some necessary knowledge and skills。 colonial activities are adventures in some degree。 colonists have to encounter many difficulties。 so a colonist should have some necessary knowledge and sk ills。 robinson crusoe can`t be a successful colonist unless he had the necessary shipping knowledge, basic living abilities and communicative skills。 those knowledge and skills are vividly presented when he lived on the isolated island for 28 years。 3
secondly, a good colonist should be enterprising and adventurous。 from york to yarmouth, from guinea to sallee, from brazils to the isolated island, robinson had gone through many adventurous trips。 the spirit of adventure helped him accumulate much knowledge about shipping and broaden his vision at the same time, with the result that he is apt to face many serious challenges。 robinson always has optimistic attitude, no matter how dangerous situation he got into。 by means of his efforts, he overcame many difficulties。 he never despaired, especially when he was deserted on the isolated island for 28 years。
thirdly, in this book, robinson crusoe regarded himself as the governor of the island and then let people explore it。 he occupied the island and incorpora ted it into one part of the uk`s territory。 in fact, those behaviors belong to colonial expansion。 robinson crusoe sold some manufactures and valuable goods when he run plantation in brazils
which can be regarded as trade development。 with the economic development, british need to market its products and gain cheap materials。 therefore, colonial expansion and trade development became two main characteristics of colonization。
fourthly, we can see robinson`s cultural colonization through his relation with friday。 for one thing, robinson was willing to reform friday。 wsterners are proud of their culture and races。 in other words, other culture and races are inferior to theirs。 one main reason why god choose them to set up colonies in the world is to perform cultural reform to other races。 for another, friday was compelled to receive robinson`s reform。 at first, friday didn`t feel his culture is inferior until he was inculcated values of the west。 friday received reform because he feared of the advanced arms-gun。
the other aspect of the novel`s theme is religion。
religious belief combines with colonial activities so that legitimize colonial activities and makes its believers regard colonization as a glory career。
in this book, at the beginning, robinson`s religi ous awareness is faint。 not until he was terribly ill on the isolated island, did he realize the need of religion。 then he attributed all his fortunes to god`s protection。 he became a devout of god in order to thank god and hope god can rescue him from the isolated island。 he read the bible two times a day
and derived strength from the bible when he in dangerous situation。 he believed god [call on me, and i will deliver you。" 7 robinson showed typical puritan thoughts, such as resist the lure, hard working, atonement, etc。 to explore new world, to create new life, to struggle hard by one`s own hands are his [absolute truth"。 on the isolated island, he nearly had no time to have a good rest。 moreover, to make profit is his only purpose。 he hardly ever had emotions, besides working and making profit。 there was no room for love in his life。 defoe made robinson, a common bourgeoisie, become an explorer, a ruler, a colonist, who was chosen by the god。
